Aviation fuel price is sky rocketing day by day, in a quest of alternative fuel Cessna has taken a step which might be helpful and easy on pocket for single engine aircraft owners/operators by developing a Diesel engine for Cessna 172. The aircraft diesel engine or aero diesel has not been widely used as an aircraft engine. Diesel engines were used in airships and were tried in aircraft in the late 1920s and 1930s, but never widely used. Their main advantages are their excellent specific fuel consumption and the somewhat higher density of their fuel, but these have been outweighed by a combination of inherent disadvantages compared to gasoline-fueled or turboprop engines. Jet A and diesel fuel produce more heat energy per gallon than does AVGAS. In addition, Jet A and diesel fuel are more readily available and easier to manufacture or refine. Internationally, diesel fuel is approximately one third less than the price of AVGAS. Diesel engines also use their fuel more economically. The ever-rising cost of avgas and doubts about its future availability have spurred resurgence in aircraft diesel engine production in recent years.

The upgrade will not only be limited to engine, also interior will dawn new look. A zero-time, new-generation, 135-horsepower Continental (formerly Centurion/Thielert) 2.0 turbo diesel engine is at the heart of the upgrade, replacing the current Lycoming power plant. The liquid-cooled diesel features full authority digital engine control (FADEC) and will drive a new three-blade MIT composite propeller. A state-of-the-art Garmin glass panel with touch-screen avionics will top off the upgrade package.

The new 2.0 Centurion engine expected to burn fuel at 75-percent cruise power of 5.2 gallons of Jet A-1 per hour, compared to a Lycoming-IO-360-powered Cessna 172’s typical fuel consumption of about 9.2 gph at the same power setting. The diesel engine is also 24-percent quieter than the Lycoming, adding comfort to the cabin and putting less strain on avionics.
